McCarthy Says Potential Terrorist ‘Sleeper Cells’ Entering Through Southern Border

Former House Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has warned that President Joe Biden’s weakness and failure to protect the border could see more terrorist sleeper cells slip into the country through the southern border.

According to the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP), nearly 170 individuals on the FBI’s terror watch lists were apprehended at the southern border in the past 12 months. That figure remains the highest number of terrorists attempting to enter the country through the Southern border in the last six fiscal years combined.

McCarthy, while speaking to NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, said he is concerned about a terrorist sleeper cell sitting inside the United States at the moment.

“I’m concerned about a cell sitting inside America today,” McCarthy told NBC News. “We just caught 18 people just last month on the FBI terrorist watch list coming across our border. More than 160 have done it this year. When we’re looking around the Middle East and the uprisings popping up around Europe and others, they could be sleeper cells right now in America. But this administration [hasn’t done anything] to change what’s happening on the southern border. We got government funding where our troops wouldn’t be paid sitting here in a month.”

The former speaker’s warning comes after The San Diego Field Office Intelligence Division of the CBP sent out a memo that Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Hezbollah terrorists could be crossing through the southern border.

According to The Daily Caller, the memo warned that the ongoing Israel-Hamas war could see suspected terrorists travel from the Middle East and enter through Joe Biden’s unprotected southern border.

“San Diego Field Office Intelligence Unit assesses that individuals inspired by, or reacting to the current Israel-Hamas conflict may attempt travel to or from the area of hostilities in the Middle East via circuitous transit across the Southwest border,” the memo reads. “Foreign fighters motivated by ideology or mercenary soldiers of fortune may attempt to obfuscate travel to or from the US to or from countries in the Middle East through Mexico.”
